How did this get started?

The reasons that i have started this are many.  I want to say it was the collapse of the building in Bangladesh that inspired this blog – but that would not be the entire truth.  I think the less shocking and horrifying reason had more of an influence. That reason was this: I took up sewing, less than a year ago.  I had not touched a sewing machine since grade 7.  I had a stack of old jeans that I did not no what to do with and one day I bought a sewing machine on Ebay for $50.  Had it mailed to me.  It was a Singer from the 70s and I was smitten.  I am getting sidelined – the point is I started making bags and little things, it was fun.  Then I made a dress.  I was floored how much work it was.  The reality of how many steps, how much effort and the careful detail that was needed… it hit me like a truck.  How on earth can we make theses clothes for $9.99?  HOW MUCH are the people being paid?!   That is the real kick that got this blog started.

There is a ceiling for the cost of clothes and a floor. I don’t know much that its worth $1000, besides a winter coat or an intricate hand made item and a dress for $9.99 hurt a few someones. All I can do is buy responsibly and treat my purchases well so they will last.

Fascinating blog, and a super resource for my daughter who is doing a school project on the Bangladesh factory collapse.
