My argument for the minimalist wardrobe

This spring my entire family went through our closets and discarded anything that did not fit or we did not love.  It was amazing the amount we got rid of and the amount that was still left.  All of us (me in particular) own way too many clothes.  The fashion industry relies on us buying more and new clothes every season.  That is how they make a profit and keep costs down, sell us more and more.

Deep down we all know this is not sustainable.  It cannot be from a labour perspective or from an environmental one.  Things need to change.

There are growing movements for minimalist or capsule wardrobes.  The idea behind the minimalist wardrobe is that you have a few pieces of clothing that can be mixed and matched so you have various looks from a small number of items.  The  idea behind the capsule wardrobe is to adopt a “uniform” and wear the same thing every day – becomingminimalist.com/wear-one.

I love the idea of a minimalist wardrobe.  It will challenge you to change things around for a fresh look using the same few pieces  – I think it is fantastic idea.  It is hard to break old habits but I am willing to try.  In the past 6 months I have bought only 2 shirts, gym clothes and exchanged some of my ill fitting clothing for others’ discards at a clothing swap.  A good first step.

To take the next step though…  I don’t think that I should get rid of clothes I love to do this.  I want to honour the work that went into making the clothing and wear them as long as they fit and last.  My minimalist wardrobe will have to evolve over time.
